We have had, Thirsty Thursday, TGIF, Karaoke Tuesdays , Saturday social and Sleeping Sunday and it was all fun while it lasted but after 25 years you start looking for more, something the previous thrills that satisfy. Like you suddenly start taking white cup and Heineken instead of Tusker. I’ve have however observed a new trend as Sunday featured events ,For years it’s been the Nyama Choma dens that saw the opportunity and run with it.
Sunday is traditionally a family day , and there nothing dear to a man than family, the urban family has less time to spend as a unit during the week that leaves only Sunday as a bonding day. These guys are more willing to spend a premium on a nice family experience. The Nyama Choma guys saw or luckily stumbled on to this opportunity – whichever came first – and started having family targeted setup, Nyama Choma, beer, live bands and bouncing castles in an outdoor setting.
Churches have also positioned themselves as family centric service, hence the popularity of these youthful churches like Mavuno et’al
Commercial event organisers like Blankets and wine realised that awhile back , took it and owned it , the event started as a platform to showcase afro- based music and slowly grown into an East African most anticipated music festival. You never see their ads, very minimal presence on social media and still the event is packed. It has cut out a loyal premium Niche audience making it the most sustainable event model in the country. Sometimes last year they became a victim of their own medicine and things got a little out of hand when there were kind of pictures taken at the event that trend online. You know what I’m talking about. I’m glad that was dealt with and event brought back to its original path.
Over the past one year I’ve observed a steady increase in [Sunday events]; actually it’s the second most active day after [Saturday]. It seems as an event organiser you have two option targets the masses and have a lot of financial backing read Safaricom 7s or sell a premium experience to a fewer audience.
The above pictures, makes blankets and wine in my own opinion the best position to be the SXSF of Africa. SXSW is one of the most effective channels for promoting your business to professionals connected in the Music, Film and Interactive industries.
