Before I start I’m just going to put it out there for critics, I’m either getting too old for it or guys don’t “rave” anymore. Back then when I was in campus going out clubbing was the thing no matter what day of the week. I remember my friend Lawi used to be so good at it he could party almost 4 weekdays with only 200 bob. He used to call it ‘zero bobbing’ (Clubbing with zero bob). Of course being a rugby player at least 2 weekdays was acceptable but 4 days…… that just too much. Anyway he had different sponsors in form of groupies, other team players and rugby earned friends that footed the bill. He was living the life and we all (my peers and I) wanted to be like him when we grew up. Then we grew up and things changed.
No one raves anymore, or not like the campus days. Event organizer’s and club mangers have also realized this and are changing tact of attracting these revelers back to their premises. That’s why there is always a themed event every day in all big pubs, bar or restaurants in any town, big or small in Kenya.
Events! That’s what’s up.
I’m sure most of you have been to a karaoke night, reggae night, Happy hours special, and other themed kind of events. This concept has been used in other countries to attract guys into their premises and is slowly picking up in Kenya. This brings me to why I’m writing things, ever heard of Build your own burger? Personally I think this is the best concept applied in clubs yet. The guys at Brew Bistro along Ngong rd created this new event where customers are given all ingredients they need to make a burger then asked to build it how you like, hence the name ‘Build your own burger’ simple concept, right? Guys have built one of the yuckiest and yummiest burgers I have seen this attracted the so called socialites and middle class to the bistro in the last 2 months, grown like wild fire. Then 2 weeks ago they tweaked the concept a little bit to #BurgerChallengeKe, get two celebrities asked them to battle on who can eat the most of the biggest burger ever made.
Last week it was Just a band vs. Sauti Sol battle royale and that really got people attention and we decide to go and see what the fuss is all about. At about 4:30 just a band arrives and a few minutes later Sauti Sol arrives all with their entourage of fans, after few shoulder bumps and jokes. Then the Sit ups, star jumps, PE style warm up stuff. At 5:30 the table is set and the crowd start getting impatient. Two humongous burgers are brought to the table and everyone is in dismay an 8 kg burger, 4kgs of meat 4k bread and toppings and 2 litres of beer to be devoured in 30 min or rather the team with the least amount left after 30 minutes wins. The team take position, rules are read out loud, “you can take a break stand , stretch, jogs, trash talk your opponents” “no going to the wash room or throwing up during the next 30 min” if you feel like throwing up you can go to the washrooms but the our camera man will follow you. Yes the whole event is recorded by some Capital FM guys and of course a lot of armature photographer struggling to get a pic for their Facebook and twitter accounts.
After a messy 30 min the left over are weighed and the team with the least kilos win. Sauti Sol won with just a gram, literally 3.60 Kg to 3.61 Kg and then the twitter jokes started. #TeamJustaband renamed to #Team JustASol and Just a band were asked to rename to “Just a Gram” and it went on and on you can follow tweets on #BurgerChallengeKe or @gigwapi on twitter for more. It was a new experience and a very clever one I must admit. Kudos to the creator.
Eagerly waiting for the next one on Tuesday and you can always get updates or more info of such nightlife events on Gigwapi.com
