Grow Your Career By Changing The Game

Are you jobless and frustrated of sending out CV’s with no positive results? I once was too until I realized  that I was doing it all wrong. So the big question is, how do you do it right?

Networking my friends, networking. And not the LAN, Wireless, router geeky stuff. The kind where you get to know someone who knows someone who knows someone x1000 and that does not include your family members. One thing about family is that they  will play an insignificant part in your career development. Most times they just want you to get a job, get married, get a car then live your life trying to keep your job or die trying. #EpicFail is you ask me.

So what is networking? The art of making mutually beneficial friends. Pronto! These are friends who will invite you for a drink, attend your wedding and any other social events but most likely won’t attend you grandmother funeral, hell, you wouldn’t expect them anyway. These friends however, will be the ones to call or send you an email on vacancies or any other opportunities at their workplace. Now that’s  networking.

Here are a few pointers on how to do it right:

  • Find and attend events that are relevant to your career path or ambitions, seminars, workshops, and conferences is a good way to start.
  • While in those events make sure you make at least one contact or what people call friends.
  • Keep in touch; be careful not to seem too needy though. Twitter and Facebook are the best ways of doing this. since you won’t have to worry about losing their contact numbers or business cards.
  • Do not worry about seeming a little needy, we all want something from someone maybe not at that time but most people at such events are probably there for the same reason.
  • Have fun, y’all know what that means so, no explanation needed.

Follow these few steps and you might be in that job or career level that you’ve always wanted sooner than you think. If worse comes to worse, you will end up with a wife or husband, whichever the case J.

So I suggest that you subscribe to updates for social, tech, sports, corporate kids and family events from an events website like Gigwapi (www.gigwapi.com) that lists all events in Kenya. Then thank me later on in the comment section.
