I don’t get my pizzas delivered. It’s a trust thing. It all started when I was just a pup, an arrogant young Pizzaman. It was late summer 1998 and I sat there waiting. The tight curls of my Jew-fro danced in the wind as I rolled down the back seat window. I watched as he walked out of Piero’s (See Pizzaman Archives picture 65) carefully cradling two large pizzas. I was having friends over for dinner. He opened the back door, gently placed the pizzas atop my lap and waited as I struggled to secure the cargo. “Hold it straight.” He closed the door and the heat of the pizza box began to burn through my AYSO shorts. Halfway home and I couldn’t take it anymore. I slid the pizzas off my lap and on to the empty seat to my left. Little did I know that I had just ruined our dinner. One mile and five minutes later we pulled into the garage, grabbed the pizzas, and walked them into the house. The natural slant of the backseat set off an avalanche of cheese and toppings, so much so that my friends thought I ordered a half cheese, half sauce-only pizza. After a proper scolding, I learned my lesson the hard way. But I’ve come a long way. I’ve since delivered pizzas for two separate establishments and pride myself on 0 new cheese avalanches. As a retired pizza delivery man, turned Pizzaman, I still find it hard to trust others to deliver a level-pizza. But I’m working on it. For now, I’ll stick to picking up my own pizzas.
